REIMAGINING THE PRODUCT LIFESPAN (THESIS PROJECT)

This project reimagines the lounge chair as a product designed to age with intention rather than be replaced. Products should follow a cyclical, regenerative lifecycle rather than a linear one. This project aims to address planned obsolescence, material longevity, and modular design as a framework for product renewal.

The design uses a hardware-free joinery system, allowing  individual components to be easily removed and replaced. The back panel uses a slot joint to create seamless insertion; the seat panel uses half lap joints and cylindrical mortise and tenons to connect the seat to the legs. These joinery techniques minimize risk of damage. 

While a standard lounge chair reclines at 100–105 degrees, this chair reclines at 107.5 degrees, creating a deeper, more intentional rest position.

The cushion system is designed to be removable and replaceable through integrated magnetic attachment points embedded within the back panel. This allows users to  update the chair’s look as their style preferences evolve. The cushions are upholstered in durable materials, designed to withstand everyday use.

The system is modular that scales over time. From one chair to a larger seating configuration, the structure expands using the same joinery logic, eliminating the need for replacement. As needs change, the product grows with the user, challenging the conventional cycle of disposal and replacement.
